Never Too Young To Suffer Grief: Grief And Traumatic Loss
Editor's Note : The "Brief Article" in this issue is what was prepared for presentation at the 3rd Annual Conference of the Grief and Mourning in Los Angeles County in early March 2007. This conference was organized mostly through the efforts of the ICAN-LACDMH (Interagency Council for prevention of child Abuse and Neglect, and Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health). Because of the time limitation, I was not able to present the entire this paper. I promised to those who asked for a copy of the paper, to include it in Baby Gazette. Thus, this "Brief Article." I hope it serves its purpose.
In this issue, you will read:
- A brief review of the grief as a trauma, behavioral cues representing the grief process in young children who have been exposed to traumatic event (separation, loss, or death of the primary caregiver, or a significant person in their lives).
- Factors influencing the child's resiliency, and capacity to survive and overcome the grief resulted from noxious events in early years of life.
- Child's factor in experiencing grief and child's outcome.
- Sample intervention modalities that are clinically and theoretically applicable and efficacious for infants and young children experiencing grief.
